Oh no! Monkey Boy killed me!

This is Chad, the Monkey Boy.  His brain is small, but his temper is big!

Sebastian Shaw plays a doctor in a nursing home, reflecting on his past.

"Hey, look!  There I am on TV! Boy, your glasses are big!"

Cheers!

Mr. Shaw's last known movie scene.

We've got to get Monkey Boy to safety!  He's just misunderstood!

Oh no! There are a million Monkey Boys!

Monkey Boy (a.k.a. Chimera) - 1990 Color (TV)
Review by Donkey Shaw

Movie Rating: 1/5 Stars
Shaw's Rating: 5/5 Scars

Synopsis: Half man, half monkey, Chad was born in a lab and kept hidden from the world. A journalist, investigating a macabre mass murder, discovers the mutant boy -- a creature with the mind of a child and superhuman strength. But the reporter finds out the hard way that nothing (and nobody) can stand in the way of progress.

Sebastian Shaw's role: Dr. Liawski

A young man named Peter gets a nervous phone message from his girlfriend, who's been recently employed at a fertility clinic.  "Something's not right." In classic slasher-film style, an unseen someone (or something) violently murders the entire staff on hand.

When Peter drives out to see his lady the next day, he's swarmed by police and helicopters. It turns out that all but one of the clinic employees had been brutally slashed and murdered.  The horrified young man is asked to identify the girlfriends body by an almost gleeful detective.

The detective and his team are pulled off the case by 'the Government'. Peter tries to do a little detective work on his own with the remaining employee 'Jenna', who's secretly a government agent.

Meanwhile, some local kids appear to have befriended the killer, referring to him as "Mr. Scarecrow". Mr. Scarecrow seems to have no problems with kids, but kills any adults on sight (like the kids' parents.)

Eventually, we find out that a scientific genetics program was muscled away from a Dr. Liawski (Sebastian Shaw!) by a bunch of mean old scientists who created a primate/human crossbreed, and plan to breed and place these creatures 'on the market.' Peter finds Sebastian Shaw withering away in an old folks home, and they have a lengthy discussion. (Finally!)

The primate has not grown to human-size and his name is Chad.  He was released by a compassionate scientist (Jenna!), who didn't want Chad dissected, and thought he'd just run away instead of kill everyone.

SPOILER! So Chad is finally tracked down and killed.  Peter's attempt to expose the corrupt government plan is thwarted by a corrupt government.  And in a scene very similar to the last scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark, we learn that there are a million Chad incubators already in production.

The Shaw Factor: Almost an hour goes by before you see any Shaw.  He only has one major scene, but it's pretty worthwhile, with plenty of dialogue and close-ups.

Character Vices: Alcohol Consumption

Character Death: No

Available on VHS / DVD? Not currently.  But I was able to pick up a used VHS copy on half.com for $0.79!

Conclusion: Light on the surprises, heavy on the cheese.  Clichéd horror film suspense, music, and killings.  It's worth about, oh, $0.79.  But it's Sebastian Shaw's last production, and is noteworthy for this fact alone.
