Jedi DVD Scandal

All of the rumors were true. After speculation about the changes to the Original Trilogy on the Star Wars DVD release, and screenshots that seemed sure to be faked, George Lucas proved yet again that nothing in the Star Wars universe is sacred.  It doesn't take a Jedi Master to figure out how the staff at SebastianShaw.com feels about the 'improvements.'

You've seen the DVDs by now, and you know about all of the changes.  But we'll document the Sebastian Shaw changes for posterity.

The first thing you'll notice about Shaw's performance on the Star Wars DVDs is that his signature eyebrows have been removed from Vader's death scene. Boo! This seems unnecessary. It's safe to assume that Anakin gets his eyebrows singed off in E3.  But I've singed my knuckles on the bar-b-que many times, and the hair always grows back, returning my hands to their gorrilla-like selves.

The film has been color corrected, and the mild fleshtones that were once there seem to have been tweaked blue, making Vader Unmasked look even more pasty and egg-like than before.  Instead of a scarred man beneath the mask, it really is starting to look like Humpty Dumpty in there.

Every Star Wars Fan now knows that the ghost-Anakin in Return of the Jedi played by Shaw has been replaced with the head of Hayden Christensen. (Or is it Christian Haydensen? I can never remember.) They didn't even bother to film young Anakin's entire body. They just digitally cut and pasted his head on top of Sebastian Shaw's body.   Weak.

What would Sebastian Shaw thought of these changes? It's hard so say. He seemed a pretty gracious fellow, and easy going.  My thought is, he'd say something like "Well, it is George's baby, and he knows best." But I doubt that anyone would be happy being removed from the final scene in one of the most popular movies of all time.

The thing is, we'll never know how Shaw feels about these changes. Rest in peace, Sebastian Shaw.
