Even though Sebastian Shaw's scene in Return of the Jedi was only a few minutes long, his image has been re-created on dozens of action figures, toys, books, cards and other minutia.

The Action Figures

The Anakin Skywalker action figure (1984) was originally a Kenner mail-away promotion. Five Star Wars figure proof-of-purchase seals would get you this free figure.    Other mail-away figure offers had included bounty hunters Boba Fett and 4-Lom, as well as Admiral Ackbar.  The Anakin offering was a disappointment to many fans, who thought it was only being given away because it was 'too dumb to sell'.  Read more about the give-away here.

The likeness to Shaw is fair.  But the eyes are usually found painted solid blue, making him look more like a Fremen from Dune than a wizened old Jedi.

Availability:  Loose, $10-15

I remember the first time I saw the Anakin Skywalker Power Of The Force carded figure (1985).  I thought, "Nobody wanted the free figure, who's going to pay $3 for it?!"  He came with no accessories, and the card art didn't even use a photograph.  It was just a cheap, airbrushed picture. It only came packaged with a coin. Kenner was trying to entice us to collect their new coins packaged with the new figures, since the Star Wars line seemed to be on its last leg.  I laughed at the thought of buying this figure.

I left Anakin on the shelf that day. And I turned my nose up at it again a year later when I saw it in the toy store bargain bin for $1.00.  And have kicked myself many times since. Now the coin alone sells for almost $100.

This figure also was available with a card that had the tri-logo and green background.

Availability:  Good luck.  They're around, but you're going to feel sore after you pay for one.   Expect to pay $2000-$3000.

In 1999, Hasbro released the Power Of The Force 2 Anakin Skywalker figure.  It featured a lightsaber for the first time, even though he never held one in the movie.  The likeness to Sebastian Shaw really wasn't any better, just different.

The figure also came packaged with an "Episode 1 Flash Back Photo. It was a sliding picture that swapped images of Sebastian Shaw and Jake Lloyd.

Check out some nice detailed pics at RebelScum.com

Availability: $2-5.  Not bad, considering the original price was $5.99.

1998 brought the Power Of The Force 2 Darth Vader with Removable Helmet.  It was a pretty cool figure that also had a removable hand, and a "Freeze Frame" card. The Freeze Frame cards were slides with scenes from the movie.  This one, of course, features Shaw himself.

Does the figure resemble Sebastian Shaw? You be the judge.

Availability: $8-15.

1998 also brought a "Cinema Scenes" action figure set called Jedi Spirits.  It had 'ghost' versions of Yodi, Obi-Wan and Anakin Skywalker.  The Obi-Wan sculpt was technically a little different, but essentially, they just re-cast the figures in translucent blue plastic.

Availability: Maybe $10-15 for the complete set. About half of the original asking price..

Now there has been some discussion about another Jedi Spirits set available as a bootleg in Japan.  This set has a different, and much nicer sculpt, than the official US release. Details are sketchy, but the few pics I've seen of this set do look nice. Check out more pics here at Joe Toy.

You might occasionally see this set offered (incorrectly) as a 'prototype' on eBay.
